School is in session on scheduled school days 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM and students may not arrive on campus prior to 7:45 AM unless enrolled in the before care program or participating in the breakfast program which begins at 7:30 AM. Desert Heights will not be responsible for students arriving before 7:45 AM. Students arriving between 7:45 AM and 8:00 AM are to report directly to their classroom and all students are expected in the classroom by 8:00 AM.
The expectation is that all students will attend school each day barring serious or contagious illness or emergency. A student may be retained if excessive absences occur throughout the school year to the detriment of his or her learning. An absence that requires a child be out for 3 consecutive days will require a Doctor’s note upon return. Ten (10) successive unexcused absences will result in the student being dropped from the enrollment. It is necessary for the school to know whether the child is ill or absent for some other reason. Chronic untimely arrival and/or late pick up may result in disenrollment. Refer to the “C.U.T.S. / C.U.T.S. L.I.T.E. PROGRAM” in the handbook for additional information regarding the process for addressing excessive unexcused/excused absences.
Please send all attendance notifications via email by clicking here. Parents/Guardians may also call the DHCS front office at (602) 896-2900 by 9:00 AM if a child will not be in attendance. Only absences called in within 24 hours of the absence will be taken into consideration for an “excused absence” notation. Excused absences are noted at the school’s discretion and when students miss school due to the following reasons.
- Illness: A doctor’s note will be required if a child is absent due to illness for three or more consecutive days or for each occurrence once a student is referred to the C.U.T.S program.
- Significant religious observance: Approval by the principal or designee must be received prior to the absence.
- Emergency: In an emergency situation, (e.g., death in the immediate family, hospitalization, etc.) the parent must notify the school office direct. The school may request supporting documentation in order to excuse the absence.
Please note that absences due to vacation or for any personal reason not noted above are typically considered unexcused. Absences not reported will be considered unexcused as well. Students should primarily refer to teacher’s websites or can e-mail teachers to request homework. Students will be given at least as many days as they were absent to make up work.
